Every morning we wake up and regain consciousness — that is a marvelous fact — but what exactly is it that we regain? Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio uses this simple question to give us a glimpse into how our brains create our sense of self. Because the feeling of having “a self” that seems like something unbroken and continues is really the marvel of the brain. Damasio takes a closer look at the brain stem and its dual interaction with the cerebral cortex on the one hand and the body on the other hand, and suggests that this part of the brain might be the dwelling ground for consciousness and the embedded “self”. Not only for humans, but also for all other vertebrates.
